No Foreigners in our
Church…
My non-Catholic friend was very
proud when he repeated to me: “Yes, in our
Church we are all Ethiopians. We are a pure Ethiopian Church and there
are no foreigners in it.”
“But it is exactly the same
with us in the Catholic Church” – I replied.
He looked at me with a malicious
smile and said: “My dear friend, how can you
try to fool me. Everyone knows that there are many foreign missionaries
in the Catholic Church in Ethiopia. This is no secret. How can you say
that there are no foreigners in your Church?”
“Well, if you allow me to explain,
I can explain it to you” – I said. “For us, Catholics, the Church is the
universal family of all those baptized with the same baptism in Christ.
Our main identity is to be members of his body. You know well your Bible
and can remember what the Apostle Paul teaches: “There can be neither
Jew nor Greek, there can be neither slave nor freeman, there can be neither
male nor female – for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians
3:28). This means that no Christian can be considered a foreigner within
the Church don’t you think so?” “Besides” – I continued – “The
Apostle Paul wrote from Rome to the Christians of Ephesus: “You are
no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fellow-citizens with the
holy people of God and part of God’s family” (Ephesians 2:19).
